Pix Plus…!

  • PixPlus…Graphic Novel Girls! (6/27/2017)

A couple years back I did a series of #PixPlus drawings in the run-up to the initial self-published release of PIX: ONE WEIRDEST WEEKEND.

For this year’s ALA (American Library Association) Annual conference, I debuted this image, Pix plus a bevy of “Graphic Novel Girls” as an 11×17 print/poster. I wanted to share it here for everyone who couldn’t make it to ALA 2017 in Chicago:

And if you’re wondering who everyone is, here’s a handy-dandy guide:

Want a copy of the poster for your library, school or home? Now you can order it from the PixComic.com store!

  • Pix Plus El Deafo…The Video! (5/6/2016)

Back when I did the #PixPlus series in the run-up to PIX: ONE WEIRDEST WEEKEND’s release, I recorded the drawing process for one off them, the El Deafo piece. Now, over a year later, here’s that video:

Thanks to Paul McMahon of The Drennons for permission to use their music. See/Hear more from them on Facebook.

  • Pix Plus…Mod Dog (from THE MIGHTY SKULLBOY ARMY)! (12/24/2014)

    PIX+ModDog

THE MIGHTY SKULLBOY ARMY is a fantastic comic/graphic novel by Jacob Chabot, who puts so much work and craft into his pages and panels you can get lost and almost miss the jokes…except you won’t, because it’s funny stuff. Skullboy is an elementary school kid with a skull for a head, who, with his henchmen, a robot and a monkey, embarks on missions to become a master super villain. And perhaps his greatest nemesis (beyond his own failures or the failures of his allies) is Mod Dog, featured in this piece. Why Mod Dog and not Skullboy himself? Would you rather it be because Pix wouldn’t team up with an aspiring bad guy or because I think Mod Dog is funny and I wanted to draw a flying dog?

Jacob Chabot‘s Eisner Award nominated MIGHTY SKULLBOY ARMY is published by Dark Horse Comics.

  • Pix Plus…Chance Falconer (from LEAVE IT TO CHANCE)! (12/23/2014)

    PIX+ChanceFalconer

Chance Falconer is the star of a comics series from the late ’90s called LEAVE IT TO CHANCE, by Paul Smith and James Robinson, and it was one of my favorite comics at the time, and, obvious in a way that I hadn’t quite registered, an influence on PIX and the kind of work I do. Chance lives in Devil’s Echo, a place where magic and supernatural occurrences are part of life, and her father is the foremost supernatural detective/protector of Devils’ Echo. Chance wants to follow in his footsteps, and the book is kind of a supernatural Nancy Drew, which might not be a fair comparison…plus she has a dragon sidekick, St. George.

The book was great, with one issue (#12 or #13, I can’t remember which, this is pre-2000 stuff I’m talking about) being so great I called Paul Smith (the artist, who I worked with a couple times as an assistant editor at Marvel) to tell him it was my favorite comic of that year. And sadly, it’s been out of print for far too long. Suffice to say I liked this series enough that I actually inquired with Image Comics, the original publisher, about what I might be able to do to get a complete collection put together and released;  I was ready to invest! But in lieu of that, I published my OWN book about a young girl dealing with strange things…and while they’re quite different in so many ways, I felt it only right to draw a piece with them together…

As I mentioned, LEAVE IT TO CHANCE is long out of print, so I have no link to info about it. Instead, a link to Paul Smith’s website (can’t seem to find a website for James Robinson).

  • Pix Plus…El Deafo! (12/22/2014)

    PIX+ElDeafo

EL DEAFO was a book I heard a lot about before I got to reading it. And yes, I recognize the…irony of hearing about a book which tells the story of a girl (Cece Bell, the author/illustrator) and her experiences growing up after she becomes “severely to profoundly” deaf. But this book was abuzz. At the 2014 ALA conference, EL DEAFO and Raina Telgemeier’s SISTERS were books I kept hearing about or seeing people carrying advance review copies of…and then it started getting rave reviews everywhere…and then people I knew had read it and couldn’t speak highly enough of it. Well, with all that hype there’s a greater chance for disappointment, but EL DEAFO is excellent comics.

Cebe Bell, who draws herself (and everyone else) as rabbit-humans, tells her story honestly and unflinchingly, using the tools of comics super effectively, most especially when it comes to her exploration of sound, something inherently absent from comics. But by manipulating lettering and word balloons and such, she achieves something only comics could do. That there’s a superhero element to it, in that Bell imagines herself a superhero with the “powers” her Phonic Ear provides, adds a layer of charm and whimsy…and gave me an excuse/reason to pair El Deafo with Pix!

Learn more about EL DEAFO here.

  • Pix Plus…The Intrepid EscapeGoat! (12/19/2014)

    PIX+Escapegoat

Brian Smith is one of those people who’s more creative than folks might ever know. His downright common name doesn’t help, but his work is far from common. He’s maybe best known for the NY Times best-selling graphic novel series he co-writes with Mike Raicht called THE STUFF OF LEGEND, but while working on that he wrote an illustrated a series called THE INTREPID ESCAPEGOAT, and it is great. Thomas Fleet is EscapeGoat, a magician and escape artist (hence the name) who, when he’s not performing feats of magic, faces down magical threats around the world, aided by his sidekick, the powerful Princess Isis. It’s worth checking out, as are his other comics, WISHFUL STINKING and THE BASICS, which, stop what you’re doing now and read them all here. It was no easy task choosing which of Brian’s works to team Pix with, but I like drawing animals, even if it’s just their heads!

I’ve actually drawn EscapeGoat once before, for Brian – a full-color piece that never saw print in the series – so I figured I’d post that image here because…why not?!

  • Pix Plus…Missile Mouse! (12/18/2014)

    PIX+MissleMouse

MISSILE MOUSE is the creation of Jake Parker, who’s done work in animation, picture books, and comics/graphic novels. He’s an illustrating/cartooning powerhouse, working in different styles and genres…it’s impressive, and each thing he does looks better than the last. MISSILE MOUSE is a graphic novel series he did for Scholastic/Graphix about a space-faring mouse with a jetpack…what else do you need to know? There’s intergalactic strife and aliens and betrayal and stuff, but in the end it’s a cool action adventure story, which isn’t dissimilar from PIX (albeit PIX is what I call a “suburban adventure story”), so why not team these two up in an awesome action shot?! Exactly.

  • Pix Plus…Barbara Thorson (from I KILL GIANTS) (12/17/2014)

    PIX+I Kill Giants

I KILL GIANTS, by Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura is a tremendous graphic novel…compelling, intense, dramatic and emotional…and it builds to that, starting as a story about a weird girl, Barbara Thorson, in school obsessed with killing giants, and becoming about facing something metaphorically much bigger. It’s similar in that respect to Todd DeZago and Mike Weiringo’s TELLOS. It’s a different kind of book and character than PIX, but there’s some shared DNA strands there. Barbara talks about giants and a fantasy world no one else sees…Pix talks about being the daughter of the fairy king without any actual proof or evidence…people look a them both a little funny, etc. So here they are, teamed up in a pretty wild action pose, inspired in part by the distinct art of Ken Niimura, who draws in a way that I don’t, but it sure looks awesome.

There’s no website for I KILL GIANTS, per se, but Joe Kelly is part of the Man of Action studios and Ken Niiumura’s online here.

  • Pix Plus…The Green Turtle (from THE SHADOW HERO) (12/16/2014)

    PIX+GreenTurtle

Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew’s THE SHADOW HERO tells the untold origin of The Green Turtle, the first ever Asian American superhero from the Golden Age of comic books in the 1940s, created by a Chinese American cartoonist named Chu Hing. It’s a great book, made all the better when, after the last story page, you get to the story BEHIND the book itself. It’s the sort of thing I could explain, but don’t want to take the experience away from you as a potential reader. Gene Luen Yang has wanted to write a superhero story for a long time and got to tell a pretty iconic one here. And the art, by Sonny Lieu, who I first noticed on a terrific book called MY FAITH IN FRANKIE, is so good on the art and storytelling.

In the end, despite the fact that THE SHADOW HERO takes place in the ’40s and Pix has a cell phone, I still wanted to draw them in a team-up situation up just the same! And I think this marks the first of this series of drawings to feature buildings, right?

  • Pix Plus…Princess Ugg! (12/15/2014)

    PIX+Ugg

PRINCESS UGG is a relatively new series by Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin, Polly and the Pirates) about Ulga, a different kind of princess, a barbarian princess well-versed in battle and warfare. She’s on a mission to learn a different path; one of diplomacy and less…barbaric actions – something more “traditional” when talking princesses. It’s a really great series and Ulga, AKA Princess Ugg, is a great character. And as a non-traditional princess it seemed fair to team up Pix, who claims to be a (fairy) princess herself, with her (and at this point I hope you’re all okay with me playing fast and loose with time and place (given prior team-ups in the series and more yet to come).

  • Pix Plus…Rapunzel (from Rapunzel’s Revenge) (12/12/2014)

    PIX+RapunzelsRevenge

I met Nathan Hale this year at the ALA conference in Las Vegas (we talked a lot about Disney’s animated movies). Then I read one of his HAZARDOUS TALES books, which was excellent, and I look forward to reading the rest of them. But when I thought about a drawing of Pix with Nathan Hale (the spy, not the author), the Hangman and the Redcoat, it wasn’t QUITE lining up in my mind’s eye. But, luckily, Hale’s done other good work, in particular the graphic novel RAPUNZEL’S REVENGE, with Shannon and Dean Hale (a lot of Hales, not all of them related).

I like fairy tales and good re-telling/re-purposing of fairy tales (there are some nods to fairy tales in PIX for sure), and RAPUNZEL’S REVENGE is that kind of thing, putting Rapunzel in the wild west, teaming her with Jack and his golden goose, and having her use her hair as lassos and whips. It’s pretty cool all around, and the hair’s such a cool visual I wanted to take a stab at it myself.

More on RAPUNZEL’S REVENGE here, and more on Nathan Hale’s HAZARDOUS TALES here.

  • Pix Plus…Grandma Ben vs. Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures (from the Bone series) (12/11/2014)

    PIX+Bone

It seems BONE is the universal answer to “what’s a good comic for kids?”. For all intents and purposes, it’s the granddaddy and monolith the rest of us all orbit. Even Raina Telgemeier, who’s books, plural, have spent years, plural, on the NY Times bestseller list, doesn’t seem to pop into people’s minds – especially in comic book circles – the way BONE does. And, without belaboring the point: Jeff Smith’s BONE is an amazing series.

And in a series of drawings teaming my character, Pix, with notable characters in kids comics, ignoring BONE would be the oversight of all oversights. Though, leave it to me to not draw the titular Bone or his cousins…or even Thorn. Nope, I opted to draw Pix kicking stupid, stupid rat creature butt alongside the totally awesome Grandma Ben.

  • Pix Plus…Abigail and the Snowman! (12/10/2014)

    PIX+AbigailAndTheSnowman

This is a first in the Pix Plus series: Pix teamed-up with characters from a comic I’ve not yet read! So what makes these characters so special? Truth be told, I don’t know. Maybe they won’t be so special. But I know ABIGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN’s a series by Roger Langridge, who did SNARKED and Muppets comics for Boom studios, wrote THOR: THE MIGHTY AVENGER among others for Marvel Comics, and has made all kinds of terrific short stories and mini-comics over the years, and of course his character Fred the Clown. And that’s almost all I need to know to want to read it.

Roger is a top-notch cartoonist (and an incredibly nice man) and I knew I wanted to do a Pix Plus with something of his. How serendipitous, then, that ABIGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN #1 comes out exactly three weeks from today. on 12/31/2014! Knowing next to nothing about it and based on the cover image I worked up this piece, Abigail, the Yeti and Pix looking like they’re having a blast.

  • Pix Plus…Secret Science Alliance! (12/9/2014)

    PIX+SecretScienceAlliance

I first saw Eleanor Davis’s work in NURSERY RHYME COMICS and FAIRY TALE COMICS, and was so impressed by those short stories I looked for more, which is how I learned about her graphic novel THE SECRET SCIENCE ALLIANCE AND THE COPYCAT CROOK. It’s great. It’s a fun story about kids who defy cliche and stereotype using their brains and teamwork to stop a bad guy. What more could you want? Well, the art and storytelling are top notch. Rich and detailed, but still lively and cartoony. She also wrote the book STINKY, from Toon Books, for younger readers still. And with all that, she does non-kids work as well. A very talented creative person, indeed.

It would take me ages to come up with the kind of cool, Rube Goldberg-ian tech in the book, so I went with something simpler but playing to my wheelhouse: a big, brassy shot of Pix with the Secret Science Alliance team leaping into action!

Here are sample pages from Eleanor Davis’s website.

  • Pix Plus…Giants Beware’s Claudette! (12/8/2014)

    PIX+GiantsBeware

GIANTS BEWARE is one of those books you read and think, “this is like an awesome animated movie on paper!”, and you’re glad comics exist so these stories, by these storytellers, can be told. Rafael Rosado and co-writer Jorge Aguirre tell the story of Claudette, who dreams of killing a giant, her brother, who dreams of becoming a chef, and their friend, who aspires to princess-hood, and how they all follow Claudette on a great adventure. It really is like a classic Disney cartoon in so many ways. Charming, funny, creative, dramatic…and superbly drawn. It was interesting to me to combine Pix with Claudette, as they’re of two so clearly different worlds – but they’re both down for adventure just the same.

And there’s a second book, DRAGONS BEWARE, on the way. So, since Pix fights a dragon in her first book, maybe I should think about having her face a giant in book two, just to keep up with Claudette…

  • Pix Plus…Amelia McBride! (12/5/2014)

    PIX+AmeliaRules

One of the early successes in the modern kids comics world – in libraries and schools, especially – was the AMELIA RULES series by Jimmy Gownley. Amelia started as self-published comics and graphic novels and, over time, found its audience and now Amelia, and Jimmy, are instantly recognized in the field. Amelia’s an incredible character and the stories Jimmy tells are full of humor, heart, and deft, skillful cartooning. There’s a reason he’s won all kinds of awards, and why I had to draw Amelia and Pix together. That Amelia actually has a superhero alter ego, Princess Powerful, well, I naturally embraced that idea in my drawing, with Pix giving Amelia a hand with flying!

I’ve been lucky to know Jimmy for a good number of years, in fact, way back in 2008/2009, I gave Jimmy and his fellow “Kids Love Comics” cartoonists John Gallagher and Harold Buccholtz, copies of PIX black and white mini-comics, and they’ve ever since been super-supportive and encouraging of my efforts, and so much of what they’ve done has been inspiring to me. Jimmy even gave me a quote to put on the back of the book, for which I’ll always be thankful. It was especially satisfying to debut the book at Baltimore Comic-Con as PART OF the Kids Love Comics pavilion alongside the guys who’d seen the early stages.

Get the scoop on Amelia here.

  • Pix Plus…the Lumberjanes! (12/4/2014)

    PIX+Lumberjanes

If you don’t know about LUMBERJANES, then I’m super happy to introduce you to it! The Lumberjanes are a group of girls at a scouting camp who find themselves, by happenstance and their own doings, facing all kinds of threat and challenge, especially those of a supernatural and/or mythical nature – from possessed boys from the other camp to dinosaurs to underground secret caves with booby traps…it’s full of awesome stuff. LUMBERJANES, created by Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, Noelle Stephenson, and Brooke Allen, is published by Boom Studios’ Boombox imprint, and the series really is terrific. The characters are unique and atypical to mainstream comics, the stories are fun and imaginative, and the art is incredibly cool; the sort of thing I look at and think, “wow, I cannot think to draw that way, but it looks so neat!”. Pix and the Lumberjanes are a natural fit, and I couldn’t not try my hand at interpreting the Lumberjanes in my own style, though it might’ve been fun to try and draw them “on model” and apply that style to Pix… Anyway, the Lumberjanes are rad and I was excited to learn that East Side Mags in Monclair, NJ, racked PIX next to LUMBERJANES when they stocked copies earlier this fall.

    More about LUMBERJANES is here.

  • Pix Plus…Cleopatra in Space! (12/3/2014)

    PIX+Cleo

CLEOPATRA IN SPACE is a graphic novel about Cleopatra (yep, THE Cleopatra) who is transported into Space as a young teen to train for her eventual reign as the legendary queen of Egypt. It’s got charming and likable characters, great action sequences, and is beautifully illustrated by Mike Maihack, who I met a bunch of years ago when were seated next to one another at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. Cleo started as a webcomic and has made the transition to a book series from Scholastic Graphix, and it’s pretty great stuff. This drawing was a lot of fun, and one of the first I drew for this series. I got a kick out of interpreting Mike’s very clean, crisp character design into something a bit “intense”, really leaning into Cleo as a tough cookie with killer aim.

  • Pix Plus…Salem Hyde! (12/2/2014)

    PIX+SalemHyde

THE MISADVENTURES OF SALM HYDE, a series of books about a young witch whose spell casting gets her into humorous pickles, is just one of the great comics by Frank Cammuso, who also creates the KNIGHTS OF THE LUNCH TABLE and OTTO books, for Scholastic Graphix and Toon Books, respectively (not to mention his self-published MAX HAMM: FAIRY TALE DETECTIVE). I chose Salem because she and Whammy (her animal companion) seemed a natural fit. Salem’s a novice witch, Pix claims to be a fairy princess… why wouldn’t these two have fun together? And I liked the idea that Pix would be utterly charmed by Salem’s antics.

Not only that, but Frank, like Jimmy Gownley and Art Baltazar and others, is kind of one of the early creators in the modern kids comics, and in the past year I’ve gotten to know him and he’s been very supportive and inspiring; not just in his work, but his general attitude and professionalism. He’s a good guy who makes terrific books! Check out more here.

  • Pix Plus…Boulder & Fleet! (12/1/2014)

    PIX+Boulder&Fleet

Jerzy Drozd is a cartoonist and teaching artist and podcast producer/host who is a champion of comics and especially comics for kids, and BOULDER & FLEET is his new webcomic about a bear and a bird and their lives as adventurers-for-hire. It’s pretty great, and Jerzy’s been incredibly supportive of PIX and my work on it and promoting it, so it seemed a natural fit for me to draw my character with his newest. And darned if I don’t like drawing animals (at the risk of a spoiler: there are animals in PIX: ONE WEIRDEST WEEKEND). Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes, my original drawing of Pix with Boulder and Fleet featured a more…aggressive take on Boulder, but hearing Jerzy talk on his numerous podcasts about his thoughts about conflict resolution, and Boulder’s approach to that in particular, led to me going back and softening him up a bit. I still think it looks pretty cool.

  • Pix Plus…Zita the Spacegirl! (11/28/2014)

    PIX+Zita

When this Pix Plus campaign began more than one person asked if they’d see Zita the Spacegirl, star of three graphic novels by Ben Hatke, in the series…and of course I was going to include Zita; I’d be a fool not to! And not just because the Zita graphic novels are great, and Ben combines adventure, wonder, and heart in his stories, but because there’s no question that Zita and Pix would have an awesome team-up adventure.

At a convention a couple years back a little girl walked by dressed as Zita. Chris Giarrusso, sitting next to me, pointed her out. When we called out “Hey, Zita!” the girl and her mom were so excited we recognized her…it was a convention highlight. Zita is pretty popular as a costume; that’s pretty rad.

    PIX+SuperDinosaur

Super Dinosaur is a talking T-Rex who uses his tiny T-Rex arms to control big, armored arms as well as missiles, lasers, jetpacks, and all kind of other stuff that creators Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard come up with. At the risk of sounding like SD’s best pal Derek Dynamo: it’s awesome. For this drawing, SD & Derek are often leaping into action with a “heck yeah, let’s kick butt” attitude, so it seemed a perfect fit that Pix would join them and dive, literally, head-first into adventure.

  • Pix Plus…Bodie Troll! (11/25/2014)

    PIX+BodieTroll

Jay P. Fosgitt’s BODIE TROLL is about the titular Bodie Troll, an adorable little guy who insists that he’s fearsome and disgusting…he’s more of the latter than the former. I met Jay at the Kids Read Comics festival in Ann Arbor this past June and was shocked to learn he didn’t come from the world of animation at all; his work is super-lively with great bounce and character designs. And it’s a fun, funny comic, too. As much as I’m impressed by BODIE TROLL, I opted to draw Pix being less than thrown by Bodie.

  • Pix Plus…Aw Yeah Comics! (11/24/2014)

    PIX+AwYeah

Action Cat and Adventure Bug are the stars of AW YEAH COMICS, the independent all-ages comic series from the team of Art Baltazar and Franco, kids comics superstars known for TINY TITANS, SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES, and ITTY BITTY HELLBOY and THE MASK. With AW YEAH COMICS, and their comic shop of the same name, they continue to bang the drum and make “comics for everyone”. In this drawing it was mostly just fun to interpret the very distinctive Aw Yeah style characters into something more along the lines of what I do…and I do like drawing animal characters.

  • Pix Plus…Mermin! (11/21/2014)

    PIX+Mermin

Mermin, the mer man from Mer, is the star of the MERMIN series of graphic novels by Joey Weiser, who, like myself, is a regular contributor to SPONGEBOB COMICS (I’ve even drawn some of his stories), but while both Mermin and SpongeBob are aquatic creatures, Mermin’s different and very entertainingly so. Super-readable and engaging, what’s most fun to me about it is the action element; Mermin’s got super powers…secrets to his identity…a uniform that could be a costume – Mermin is kind of a superhero…a new kind of Aquaman in a lot of ways. With that, it seemed natural to draw my interpretation of Mermin in as super heroic a way I could, comin’ at ya with classic superhero comics posing!

  • Pix Plus…Amulet’s Emily Hayes! (11/20/2014)

PIX+AmuletEmily Hayes is the the AMULET series, by Kazu Kibuishi. At six volumes and counting, AMULET follows Emily as she, with her brother and mother, discover new worlds, encounter new robotic and anthropomorphic animal friends, and face many obstacles and enemies, as she learns to control and use the power of the Amulet she wears around her neck. This is a tremendous series. The first ten pages or so of the first volume, THE STONEKEEPER, are intense and emotional and quite riveting, and sets the stage for  an engaging, epic story, told deftly and with a lot of humanity. For this drawing I opted to show Emily wielding the power of the Amulet in a bold, dynamic, super heroic fashion…and Pix has her back!

  • Pix Plus…Starbunny, Inc! (11/19/2014)

    PIX+Starbunny

Starbunny, Inc. is a terrific new webcomic from Dave Roman (ASTRONAUT ACADEMY, AGNES QUILL), about a bunny, Blue, his family milkshake business, and his star. Read chapter one and tell me you’re not engaged and want to know what happens next.  This is good stuff. My drawing’s a bit of projection, an imagined scenario based on the story so far.

Check it out at starbunny.net, and see more of Dave’s work at yaytime.com.

  • Pix Plus…Superhero Girl! (11/18/2014)

PIX+SuperheroGirlSuperhero Girl is the star of the selfsame titled webcomic-turned-Eisner Award-Winning hardcover collection from Dark Horse Comics, by Faith Erin Hicks (FRIENDS WITH BOYS, NOTHING CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG). It’s a really great read, and Faith’s art is top notch; especially her attention to facial expressions and body language. For this drawing it seemed a natural fit to have these two costumed girl heroes flying/leaping gleefully over rooftops.

  • Pix Plus…The Color Guardians! (11/17/2014)

    PIX+ColorGuardians

The G-MAN series of graphic novels by Chris Giarrusso are so great. They’re funny, adventurous, and have more heart than I think people even realize. The color guardians, a group of super-powered girls representing colors of the spectrum, are just one part of the great cast of characters that populate the G-MAN world. For this drawing I’ve teamed Pix with the full team of Color Guardians as they engage with something that clearly doesn’t stand a chance…
